Pet Friendly Flats to Rent - Essential Living

Pet Friendly Flats to Rent

Blog Living With Us
11.01.21

Anyone who rents their home with a dog or cat will know that finding pet friendly flats to rent is no easy task.

Despite there being millions of homes to rent around London, many landlords are hesitant to allow our furry friends to stay.

And that’s a real shame, as the UK is a nation of pet lovers!

A staggering 45% of all households in the UK are home to a family pet:

  • 26% are home to a dog
  • 18% are home to a cat
  • Even 0.8% are home to a tortoise!

So with as much as a fifth of UK households being within the private rental sector (landlords renting out their properties to tenants) why do renters face such issues when it comes to a house move?

A study by SpareRoom found that “78% of tenants struggled to find rented accommodation that will allow their pets to live with them”.

As a landlord that offers pet friendly flats to rent, that’s a statistic that baffles us.

Why do landlords not allow pets?

It’s surprisingly hard to find a landlord that accepts pets.

Many landlords are simply opposed to the damage that a pet can cause in a flat.

It’s fair to say that dogs and cats can cause a fair amount of wear and tear – even the well-behaved ones.

From shedding hair and scratching furniture to sickness and other accidents, pets can have a detrimental impact on a property.

You might not notice the gradual change if you live with a pet, but a landlord will notice the difference.

Bad offenders can have a big impact on a property. So much so that the deposit sometimes doesn’t cover all the damage.

So it’s understandable why some landlords would want to steer away from this.

But not us.

Why we offer pet friendly flats to rent

We offer pet friendly flats simply because we believe that pets are a vital part of a home and a family.

Beyond the obvious benefit of having an extra friend about the apartment, there are also dozens of benefits to owning a pet. They reduce stress, combat loneliness, and even boost your immune system.

Dogs are also great for improving your fitness, as you have to take them for a short walk every day.

Having a pet is also a great way to meet new people in London. Connect with fellow dog walkers or use your experiences with a pet as a handy conversation starter.

So by banning pets, we would be limiting our residents’ lifestyle. And that’s not something we’re willing to do.

We’ve always had pet friendly properties to rent ever since we opened our first building, Vantage Point, in September 2016. Back then we launched a few pet friendly floors for pet owners.

By the time we were opening our second development, Dressage Court, we realised how important and popular pet ownership was to renters. So we made all our apartments in all our developments pet friendly!

What are the rules?

We do have some rules when it comes to pets in our properties. Not all pets are allowed as there are limitations on what’s fair, ethical and safe in a city apartment. The pets we allow are:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Select birds
  • Fish

Sadly we don’t allow animals that fall outside of the above list. Also, dogs listed on the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 are not allowed.

If you decide to apply for one of our apartments then all you’ll have to do is complete a pet licence . We’ll sometimes ask you to attend a ‘pet interview’, where our residents’ team will meet your pet just to double check that it will fit in with the rest of the community, and that it’s veterinary records are up to date.

Some other options you might find helpful

We hope that you’ll want to live in one of our pet friendly flats. But we also know that we may not be a perfect match for you.

Your budget may not stretch to our prices, you might want to live in a part of London where we don’t have a building, or we might be fully let.

The demand for pet friendly flats to rent far outstrips the supply right now. So we thought we’d be helpful and point you in a few other directions in case we’re not a good fit.

Movebubble

First and foremost, download the Movebubble app.

Movebubble is one of the most popular residential property portals for finding your next place to rent.

And they’re one of the only property portals that includes a pet-friendly filter within their advanced search. So you can filter out the hundreds of non-pet friendly properties and just focus on checking out those that are suitable for your pet too.

Zoopla

Although it’s not immediately obvious, Zoopla does allow its users to filter for pet friendly lets.

You won’t be able to do it straight away. Instead, perform a search for the area, budget and apartment type you want. Then, on the results page, you’ll be able to filter results for pet friendly rentals.

This is a big win for pet-loving renters, as Zoopla has thousands of properties live at any one time — so you’ll have plenty of choice!

OpenRent

OpenRent is the property portal where private landlords tend to advertise direct to renters, instead of going through a letting agent.

Just like Zoopla, on the search results page, you’ll find a tick box for pet friendly flats to rent.

Just be sure you double check the rules with any landlord you enquire with, as it’s like that different landlords will have different rules. Check which pets are allowed, and whether there’s a change to the deposit and rent.

Lets with Pets

Keep an eye on the Lets with Pets website, which was set up by the Dogs Trust.

They’re building a list useful links to accommodation providers and portals that all offer a pet friendly angle.
