Pet interview checklist

PET INTERVIEW
CHECKLIST
GUIDANCE FOR PET INTERVIEWS
We require all prospective residents who intend to bring a pet to attend a pet interview. This is the best way to assess whether
the person is a responsible pet owner. During this interview we look for:
• Whether the pet is clean, well-groomed and odour-free
• Whether a dog is calm and responsive to the owner’s commands
• Whether you are in control of your pet without yelling, jerking the leash or hitting the pet
INFOMATION REQUIRED
During the pet interview, you may be asked for the following information:
• Pet’s name
• Pet’s sex
• Whether it’s spayed/neutered
• How long you have owned the pet
• Who owned the pet previously (if less than 1 year)
You may also be required to supply a pet reference – preferably from your last landlord – along with a copy of your pet’s
vaccination/medical history.
CARE INFOMATION
You may also be asked some questions regarding how you care for your pet. Most of these questions do not have right or
wrong answers. The important thing is that you show yourself to be a responsible pet owner and are comfortable explaining
how you care for your pet. These questions may include:
For all animals:
How do you care for this pet?
Who takes care of the pet when you are away?
Who is your veterinarian (full address and contact details)?
How do you control parasites and fleas (if applicable)?
What is the maximum time that your pet will be left alone?
For dogs:
How often is the dog walked? What kind of regular exercise does the dog get?
Is the dog left alone for extended periods of time? How many hours? Describe the typical situation.
How does the dog amuse him/herself when alone?
Has the dog had any obedience training? Describe what, when, for how long, reaction with other dogs.
How do you deal with the following behaviours: barking/whining, chewing, scratching?
How does the dog behave with other people? Including strangers, children and other dogs.
