Bins and recycling - Essential Living

Bins and recycling

We want to encourage all residents to recycle as much as possible and so to assist this we have installed 3 x 10 litre waste bins in the kitchen and provided every resident with a food caddy bin.

Refuse is to be disposed of via the rubbish chute located on each floor; this is for the Recycle and General waste only.

Please split recycling from general waste, place in the chute and press appropriate button.

We have provided fixed bins within the apartment, sized for use via the chute. No large items should be forced down the chute i.e. Pizza boxes as these will block the chute when they open.

Food waste is to be taken to the basement level in the food caddy and disposed of in the food waste refuse bin when suitable for the resident.

Recycling waste

Residents can recycle and reuse a wide range of items and materials at the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC). 40 Hornsey Street, Islington, London, N7 8HU, off Holloway Road.

Battery recycling

No Batteries should be put in the general or recycling waste on site.

Most supermarkets and shops that sell batteries will now provide a collection bin for used batteries.

There is also battery recycling collection points in libraries across the borough. All portable batteries between 1.5 volts and 9 volts can be recycled and we recommend you do so at the Archway Library, Hamlyn House, Highgate Hill, N19 5PH.

Recycling electricals

Please don’t throw things like kettles, toasters, hairdryers, cameras, mobile phones away or leave them to gather dust in the back of the cupboard.
Simply take them to the HRRC or one of the councils on street electrical recycling banks where they can be safely recycled.

123 Recycle For Free.

A free of charge service for households in North London. To book a collection from Islington please call 020 3457 5681 or e mail for a call back.

Clothes and textiles

There are a large number of textile recycling points sited across the borough. Please refer to the council’s web site for details.
